
Why do I need a Plate Load?
There are several reasons why you might need a Plate Load / CBR Test such as:
- You need to establish the strength of a crane base or piling mat prior to mobilisation.
- You need to test the formation or subgrade to ensure that the design loading can be achieved.
- You need to test placed materials such as capping or sub-base to prove that you have achieved the required compaction.

What is involved in a Plate Load Testing?
The following points will provide a brief outline of the plate load testing process:
- A kentledge (usually an excavator) is used to apply an increasing load upon a specified diameter circular plate to induce settlement.
- The vertical deformation is recorded by settlement gauges and the load is increased at timed intervals.
- The ultimate bearing capacity of the soil can then be calculated from the plate load test results.
- It is also possible to calculate an equivalent CBR value and modulus of sub grade reaction.
